While our headquarters is located in Redding, California, we are able to serve students in Shasta, Trinity, Tehama, Siskiyou, Modoc, Plumas, and Lassen counties. We meet the educational needs of our students using a learning model called Personalized Learning.
How Do You Want to Learn? You Have Choices.
Our school, Shasta Charter Academy (formerly known as Secondary Home School), is a performance-based, high achievement charter school. We are a free public charter school. We offer high school students the opportunity for powerful, rigorous, innovative teaching and learning, while preparing them for employment and/or continued education. We are an APLUS+ Charter School, we have been in operation for 18 years, and we are one of the oldest charter schools in California.
Shasta Charter Academy uses a Personalized Learning model of education. In Personalized Learning, a certificated teacher works with a student and parents to develop an individualized curriculum drawing from a palette of varied instructional modalities. We meet the students' needs according to their interests and by playing to their strengths.
Instructional modalities may include on-campus classes, concurrent enrollment at comprehensive high school campuses in our district, courses at the local community college, on-line learning, our brand of independent study (which includes a heavy emphasis on parent/tutor/family involvement), community activity (which may include organizations like the local swim team, Scouts, the Redding Symphony, various sports, music, and drama groups), or private lessons with one of our vendors (Do you want to learn to play the harp? Brazilian Jujitsu? Dance? We've got a qualified expert for that!)
We have some great on-campus classes. The Shasta Charter Academy student community participates in various onsite learning opportunities, including math, vocational education, science, computer science, tutoring, special ed, robotics, photography, digital art, ceramics, and fine art classes.
Students achieve their goals using a multitude of new, powerful, and proven educational models. Parents support their child's learning as they remain the essential force in affecting values, attitudes, and beliefs. Teachers are facilitators of discovery, mentoring and consulting with families regarding home-based classes, community-centered education, distance learning, and traditional school models where appropriate.
As students, parents, and facilitators develop Personalized Student Learning Plans, each student is allowed and encouraged to reach their goals by the use of modalities specific to his or her learning style while ensuring parental choice. The greatest benefit of this Personalized Learning model is that parents and students are empowered to make the educational choices that meet the student's needs. They also receive support from a well-trained teacher that truly gets to knows each student well. Most importantly, students develop a love of learning.
